Tschan

Tschan is a leading German manufacturer of elastic couplings, coupling elements and torsion-damping connecting components for industrial drive technology. As part of the Rexnord Group, Tschan supplies elastic rubber couplings, jaw couplings, disc couplings and gear couplings for connecting electric motors to pumps, compressors, fans and gearboxes in heavy industrial applications. With a catalog of 1,043 products, Tschan provides the most complete line of elastic coupling technology for torques from 20 Nm to 120 kNm.

Tschan Nor-Mex elastic couplings are the most used products in the range. The Nor-Mex G-series jaw couplings consist of two metal jaw flanges and an elastomeric coupling element (star or ring) that damps torsional excitations, compensates shaft misalignment and absorbs shock loads. Elastomeric elements are available in NBR rubber (standard industrial), polyurethane (higher load capacity) and Hytrel (high temperature). The coupling size is determined by the nominal torque and application shock factor.

Tschan rubber couplings are available in numerous versions for specific application requirements. The 112-series rubber gear couplings compensate shaft angular misalignment up to 1.5° and axial shaft displacement up to 2 mm. Coupling elements S170 VKR are available as flat rubber ring elements for compact coupling housings. Disc couplings (lamella couplings) from Tschan provide torsionally rigid connections for applications where no torsional spring effect is desired but shaft misalignment compensation is needed.

Tschan special couplings include overload torque-limiting couplings with torque limiter function, shear pin couplings for overload protection and thermoplastic coupling elements for low-load applications. For high-speed drives (air compressors, turbo pumps), dynamically balanced coupling variants with balanced coupling flanges for rotational speeds up to 6,000 rpm are available.

Tschan coupling flanges are available in SAE, DIN and customer-specific versions for direct mounting on motor flanges of electric motors, combustion engines and hydraulic pumps. Bore versions are available for shaft diameters from 10 mm to 250 mm with fitted hub bore, cylindrical bore or tapered SAE bore. Clamping hub and split hub versions allow easy assembly and disassembly without special tooling.

At Verkopershulp.nl you will find the complete Tschan range including replacement elastomeric coupling elements, jaw flanges and mounting materials. History

Tschan GmbH was founded in 1913 in Saarbrücken, Germany, as a manufacturer of mechanical coupling components for the Saarland mining and steel industries. The strategic location in the Saarland, then one of the largest heavy industry regions in Europe, gave Tschan direct access to the biggest customers for coupling technology. The company was a pioneer in developing elastomeric coupling elements for industrial drive technology, defining the market for vibration-damping motor connections. In the 1950s and 1960s, Tschan expanded its product range to elastic Nor-Mex jaw couplings for electric motors in the broader mechanical engineering industry. Tschan was acquired by the Rexnord Group and has maintained its production facilities in Saarbrücken, Germany as a specialist manufacturer of elastic coupling technology for the global market.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I select the correct Tschan Nor-Mex coupling for my application?
For selecting a Tschan Nor-Mex coupling you need the nominal torque (Nm), maximum peak torque, motor power and application shock factor. The nominal torque of the coupling must be ≥ motor-driven torque × shock factor. Tschan shock factors range from 1.25 (smooth load) to 3.0 (heavy shock load for mining). Our technical experts help you with the sizing calculation.
What is the difference between NBR, polyurethane and Hytrel coupling elements?
NBR rubber coupling elements are the standard choice for industrial applications at ambient temperatures from -40°C to +80°C with good oil resistance. Polyurethane coupling elements have a higher static and dynamic load capacity (up to 1.5x higher torque for the same coupling size) and are applied at higher loads. Hytrel elements are designed for applications up to +120°C continuously and withstand higher torsional deformation.
Can Tschan coupling elements be replaced without dismounting the coupling?
Yes, most Tschan Nor-Mex jaw couplings are designed for replacement of the elastomeric coupling element without dismounting the coupling flanges from the shaft. The coupling element is slid radially out of the coupling after creating axial shaft clearance. This enables preventive maintenance without realigning the coupling after servicing.
How much shaft misalignment can Tschan couplings compensate?
Tschan Nor-Mex elastic jaw couplings compensate angular misalignment up to 1° per coupling half (total 2°), radial shaft offset up to 0.2-1.5 mm depending on coupling size, and axial shaft displacement up to 1-3 mm. Exact values depend on size and series. It is recommended to minimize shaft misalignment as much as possible to maximize the service life of the coupling element.
What is a disc coupling and when do I use it instead of an elastic coupling?
A Tschan disc coupling (lamella coupling) uses metal lamella sets for torque transmission and is torsionally rigid (no spring effect). Disc couplings are suitable for applications requiring precise angular position transmission, such as servo motor-driven positioning systems, encoders and measurement drives. Elastic couplings are more suitable for applications with shock loading, vibration damping and less precision requirements.
Are Tschan couplings available for high-speed applications?
Yes, Tschan supplies specially balanced coupling versions for applications with shaft speeds up to 6,000 rpm, including air compressors, turbines and high-speed centrifugal pumps. The balanced coupling flanges are dynamically balanced conforming to ISO 1940-1 quality class G2.5. Additional balancing conforming to G1.0 is available for extremely high-speed drives.
Does Verkopershulp.nl supply replacement coupling elements for Tschan couplings?
Yes, Verkopershulp.nl supplies replacement NBR, polyurethane and Hytrel coupling elements for the complete Tschan Nor-Mex range. Replacement coupling elements are supplied individually or as a set for a complete coupling. Our technical experts advise you on material selection and the correct replacement element for your Tschan coupling.
