Stromag

Stromag is a leading European manufacturer of industrial brakes, couplings and torque-limiting components for heavy industrial drives. As part of the Altra Industrial Motion Group, Stromag supplies disc brakes, drum brakes, spring-applied brakes, hydraulic brake-clutch combinations, flexible couplings and gear couplings for the crane and hoisting industry, energy sector, steel industry and offshore market. With a catalog of 1,119 products, Stromag delivers high-quality torque management technology for the most demanding operating conditions.

Industrial disc brakes are Stromag's core products. These brakes are available as spring-applied (fail-safe) electromagnetic or hydraulically released brakes for application on wind turbines, hoisting cranes, container cranes and mine hoisting equipment. The BMH and GHE series disc brakes are designed for braking torques from 1 kNm to over 1000 kNm and are certified for safety braking functions in ISO 13849 PLc applications. Drum brakes are available for applications requiring high braking torques with limited width.

Stromag flexible couplings dampen vibration excitation between motor and load and protect connected machine components against overload. The Arcusaflex and Arcusaflex BQ series are particularly suited for harbor cranes, steel rolling mills and mining machines where torsion angle compensation and shock force dampening are essential. Stromag gear couplings provide high torque capacity with accommodation for shaft misalignment and axial displacement.

Stromag limit switch combinations (end-limit switch modules) are used for positioning, speed monitoring and overtravel protection in hoisting installations and cranes. The HGE and GHE series include a complete program of limit switch modules with mechanical and electronic contacts for various circuit configurations. Multi-step switch modules control the braking, speed reduction and end-stop functions of hoisting cranes in one integrated module.

At Verkopershulp.nl you will find the complete Stromag range with direct availability of common models and technical documentation. Our technical experts support you in selecting the correct brake type, torque capacity and safety certification for your heavy industrial drive.

History

Stromag was founded in 1932 in Unna, Germany, and early on specialized in the production of industrial brakes and couplings for the European steel and mining industries. The company grew rapidly during the strong post-war industrial expansion in Germany and extended its product range to hydraulic brake-clutch combinations and complex limit switch modules. In the 1980s and 1990s, Stromag established itself as market leader in brakes for wind turbines and container cranes in ports. Stromag is today part of the Altra Industrial Motion Group and has subsidiaries in Europe, North America and Asia.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the principle of a Stromag spring-applied brake?
A Stromag spring-applied brake (fail-safe brake) is closed by internal springs when no electromagnetic or hydraulic actuation is present. On power failure or hydraulic pressure loss, the brake automatically engages, which is essential for safety braking functions in hoisting installations and wind turbines. Magnets or hydraulic cylinders release the brake during normal operation.
What safety category are Stromag wind turbine brakes certified to?
Stromag wind turbine disc brakes are certified conforming to IEC 61400-1 and GL (Germanischer Lloyd) for wind turbine applications, and conforming to EN 13849 Performance Level c or d depending on the application scenario. The brakes hold DNV-GL certification for offshore applications and are used in turbines from most major manufacturers worldwide.
How do I size a Stromag disc brake for my application?
Sizing a Stromag disc brake requires the maximum braking torque (depending on load, lift height and braking time), the disc diameter, the peripheral speed at the brake disc, the required holding and stopping brake functions and the required safety category. Verkopershulp.nl can engage Stromag specialists for detailed brake calculation based on your installation data.
Are Stromag couplings suitable for high torsional excitation?
Yes, Stromag Arcusaflex flexible couplings are specifically designed for applications with high torsional excitation, shock loading and misalignment. The elastomeric elements in the coupling absorb energy shocks and dampen torsional vibrations, significantly extending the service life of connected components (motors, gearboxes, bearings).
What is the difference between a Stromag limit switch module and a standard limit switch?
Stromag limit switch modules are specifically designed for hoisting installations and integrate multiple switching positions (working speed, reduced speed, end position) in one compact module mounted directly on the crane drive. They provide monitoring of working range, speed reduction and overtravel protection in one integrated unit, which a standard limit switch does not provide.
Are Stromag brakes suitable for offshore applications?
Yes, Stromag supplies brakes and couplings specifically certified for offshore environments with DNV-GL and ABS certification. These models are manufactured from corrosion-resistant materials withstanding seawater, salt spray and high humidity. They are used in hoisting cranes on drilling platforms, subsea systems and offshore wind turbines.
Does Verkopershulp.nl offer technical support for Stromag brakes and couplings?
Yes, Verkopershulp.nl has technical specialists who assist you in selecting Stromag brakes, couplings and limit switch modules for your heavy industrial application. We advise on brake capacity, material specification, safety certification and installation configuration.
