Norgren

Norgren is a leading British manufacturer of pneumatic control components, fluid handling systems, and air treatment units for industrial automation. As part of the IMI Precision Engineering division of IMI plc, Norgren delivers high-quality pneumatic cylinders, solenoid valves, FRL units (Filter-Regulator-Lubricator), vacuum components, and complete valve islands for the most demanding industrial applications worldwide.

The Norgren range includes the Excelon FRL series (ISO 5599-compliant air service units), Olympian and Elion series solenoid valves (3/2 and 5/2 solenoid valves), Lintra and Coda pneumatic cylinders in ISO 15552 and ISO 6432 standard sizes, Shortstroke and Guided cylinders for precise linear movement, Excelon Plus air treatment units with modular expansion, and SY series vacuum Venturi ejectors for pneumatic gripping.

Norgren distinguishes itself through its extensive material selection: cylinders and valves are available in standard aluminum and stainless steel for corrosive and hygienic applications. The Norgren BVEX and AG series are specifically certified for ATEX Zone 2 environments in the chemical industry.

Norgren's IVAC and valve island systems combine multiple solenoid valves in a modular island structure with IO-Link or AS-Interface bus coupling. This significantly reduces cabling requirements and simplifies installation and diagnostics of complex pneumatic drive systems.

At Verkopershulp.nl we carry over 1,902 genuine Norgren products, including cylinders, valves, FRL units, vacuum components, and accessories. As an authorized distributor we guarantee fast delivery, technical support, and full warranty.

History

Norgren was founded in 1923 by Carl Norgren in Denver, Colorado (USA) as a manufacturer of air treatment accessories for pneumatic systems. The company grew rapidly thanks to the introduction of its signature filter-regulator-lubricator combinations. In the 1950s Norgren expanded internationally into Europe and Asia. From the 1970s to the 1990s Norgren grew through acquisitions of specialized pneumatic manufacturers in Europe, including British Martonair and Italian tekno-electro. In 1996 Norgren was acquired by British IMI plc, strengthening international expansion. The company integrated its pneumatic activities into the IMI Precision Engineering division alongside Herion (fluid valves) and Buschjost. Today Norgren operates from its headquarters in Lichfield, England with manufacturing facilities in the USA, Germany, Italy, and Czech Republic. The brand distributes its products in more than 100 countries through a network of authorized distributors including Verkopershulp.nl.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I select the correct Norgren pneumatic cylinder?
Select a Norgren cylinder based on the required force (F = P × A, where P is working pressure and A is piston area), stroke length, mounting method (clevis, foot, flange, center trunnion), connection sizes, and environment (standard, stainless steel, hygienic). Use Norgren's Workpiece Selector tool for exact cylinder selection based on desired force and stroke.
What is the maximum working pressure of Norgren pneumatic cylinders?
Norgren ISO 15552 cylinders operate standard at 1-10 bar with recommended working pressure of 4-8 bar. Special high-pressure versions are available up to 16 bar. The maximum working pressure depends on the cylinder type and stroke length; always check the Norgren specifications for your specific model.
Are Norgren solenoid valves suitable for vacuum applications?
Yes, Norgren 3/2 solenoid valves in the Olympian series are suitable for both overpressure (up to 10 bar) and vacuum (down to -0.9 bar). Special vacuum valves with lower threshold values are available for vacuum gripper and vacuum transport applications. Norgren's ejector series provides integrated vacuum generation via the Venturi effect.
How do I correctly set up a Norgren FRL unit?
Set the filter-regulator to the desired system working pressure (typically 5-6 bar for standard pneumatics). Check the condensate drain of the filter and empty periodically. Set the lubricator to the recommended oil dosing (approximately 1 drop per 10-50 cycles depending on the tool). When using lubrication-free cylinders and valves: do NOT use a lubricator – this damages the self-lubricating seals.
Are Norgren cylinders available in stainless steel?
Yes, Norgren supplies cylinders to ISO 15552 standard in stainless steel (1.4301/304 and 1.4404/316) for use in food, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. These cylinders withstand frequent high-pressure cleaning and have food-safe seals (FDA-approved NBR or EPDM). Norgren applies special hygiene standards to its food-grade product line.
What is the difference between Norgren 3/2 and 5/2 solenoid valves?
A 3/2 solenoid valve has 3 ports (1 inlet, 1 outlet, 1 exhaust) and 2 positions – suitable for single-acting cylinders or vacuum applications. A 5/2 solenoid valve has 5 ports (1 inlet, 2 outlets, 2 exhausts) and 2 positions – suitable for double-acting cylinders where both sides are alternately pressurized for extension and retraction.
How do I reduce the air consumption of my Norgren pneumatic system?
First reduce working pressure to the functional minimum. Use Norgren cylinders with small bores for low forces. Minimize hose volumes and connection lengths. Use speed controllers (flow controllers) to limit stroke speed and air flow consumption. Checking for leakage via periodic pressure test at standstill is essential – small leaks are costly.
Does Verkopershulp.nl supply Norgren seal kits for cylinders?
Yes, we supply genuine Norgren cylinder seal kits for all common ISO 15552 and compact cylinder models. Kits contain piston seals, rod seals, O-rings, and dust wipers in NBR, EPDM, or polyurethane material. Specify the Norgren article number and bore diameter of your cylinder for the correct seal kit.
